Shark Finning :

This horrific practice is still being undertaken by the Japanese and closer to home by the Spanish. The EU attempted to bring out regulation, preventing the fishermen from simply chucking the helpless shark back into the ocean and insisting that they would have to keep the carcass of each shark. Whilst still highly unpleasant however, this would effectively reduce the amount of sharks that could be recklessly de-finned on any one trip, simply due to lack of storage, as well as gaining some small degree of knowledge about which species were being caught. As a result of Spain's displeasure at this though, the rule is now practically impotent, as fishermen merely have to log the details of each unfortunate shark. Thus paving the way for them to continue this barbaric practice pretty much unfettered.
