Ras Mohammed
Ras Mohammed is the National Park that is located right at the very tip of the Sinai Peninsula. It begins right at the Southern most end of Sharm el Sheikh, by the Travco jetty and covers the whole tip, south of that... an area covering 480 square kilometres incorporating both land and sea.
Being the National Park, there are obviously some rules in place in order to prevent damage to the reef and indigenous life there. To be honest, we follow these rules throughout the whole Sharm el Sheikh area, which are in brief: don't touch, take, feed, fish, leave any litter, or dive below 30 metres, basically the same rules I explained at the beginning of this chapter. There is also an entry fee payable every time you enter the park either by land or sea, which helps maintain the park and the research undertaken there.
There are some sites that remain closed to divers, namely the inside of Ras Ghozlani often known as Turtle Beach, and The Lighthouse Reef. Maybe one day we will be permitted to dive these areas, however they are currently closed partly for research and partly to protect the nesting turtles that lay their eggs on the beach behind Ras Ghozlani. In fact for many years, Ras Ghozlani itself was closed to divers in order to allow it to recover and flourish a little, and flourish it did. It re-opened round about the late nineties.
